Laser Therapy for Joint/ Muscle Pain and Arthritis
Laser therapy, or “photobiomodulation” is the use of specific wavelengths of light to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling, and an increased range of motion. This treatment has shown to be beneficial to help with mobility for pets that have sudden pain or have chronic mobility issues.
WHY do we recommend Laser Therapy?
-
Laser therapy treatment reduces inflammation, pain, and swelling in muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints.
-
Laser therapy can decrease the severity of pain and length of medical treatment for joint disease.
-
Laser therapy can lower the dose and frequency of medications needed to treat painful conditions.

HOW does laser therapy work?
-
Laser therapy uses a simple beam of light to penetrate deeply into tissues. During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the affected area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved.
WHEN to start treatment?
-
Laser therapy can be beneficial at the onset of an acute injury when your pet suddenly is limping or looks in pain. When used early in the course of injury, pain management is more successfully managed and healing times are shortened.
-
As chronic joint disease or back pain progresses, a course of laser therapy will help to slow to progression of joint inflammation and improve comfort.
WHAT is the process for laser therapy treatment?
-
For sudden lameness or pain, we use laser therapy as needed depending on your pet's response to treatment. Often significant response is noted w/in 12-24 hours and, 1-3 treatments on consecutive days may be all that is needed for acute pain or soreness.
-
For chronic mobility issues, typically 6 treatments are completed over the period of 1 month. A sample treatment schedule as follows:
-
Every other day for one week (3 total)
-
Twice the second week (2 total)
-
Once the third week (1 total)
-
Boosters as needed
NOTE: Your veterinarian will recommend a treatment plan specific to your pet’s condition.
WHAT to expect:
-
There is no patient sedation or restraint required and the experience is usually pleasant and comforting to your pet.
-
Although improvement is often seen after the first visit, most patients require several treatments (3 to 8) for greatest benefit.
-
For most conditions, we recommend a multi-visit treatment plan. Treatments vary in length, but most sites require 2 to 8 minutes. A majority of patients exhibit greater comfort and mobility within 12 to 24 hours after a laser treatment.
-
Class IV Laser therapy treatments are cumulative in nature. The length and frequency of treatments vary based on your pet’s condition.
